Deploying Sure, a self-hosted finance app

Draft · Self-hosting · Docker · PostgreSQL

This post is a work in progress. The outline below is what I plan to write up.

What Sure is

Sure is an open source personal finance and wealth management app. It is a community-maintained fork of Maybe Finance, which was open sourced after the company shut down its consumer product. It is licensed under AGPLv3 and runs as a Ruby on Rails app with PostgreSQL and Redis, packaged for Docker.

Why I am deploying it

(To write: why I chose to self-host this, and what I want to learn from it.)

Planned sections

  • Requirements and architecture: the app, PostgreSQL, Redis, and where each runs
  • Deploying with Docker Compose
  • Secrets and configuration, without committing anything sensitive to Git
  • Access and security: who can reach it, over HTTPS, and with what authentication
  • Backups and restore testing for the database
  • Updates and what I would automate
